La inestabilidad de la afinación de los instrumentos antiguos (claves, clavicordios y órganos positivos) hace necesaria su afinación prácticamente a diario. Esta inestabilidad se acentúa por el constante transporte de dichos instrumentos a lugares que no son el aula habitual, dado que se necesitan para otras actividades y audiciones de otras especialidades.
Teniendo en cuenta, por otra parte, que la afinación del instrumento propio será una actividad necesaria y cotidiana en la actividad profesional del alumno, se hace imprescindible que los alumnos aprendan cuanto antes y practiquen constantemente, con un objetivo doble: el de desarrollar el hábito y el oído para afinar el instrumento de un modo eficaz y rápido (a la vez que se practica la asignatura de Afinación y Temperamento), y el de mantener los instrumentos a punto para clases y ensayos.
